Measuring the buzz
Nielsen Social is a platform that aggregates in real-time what people are talking about using Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. Owned and operated by the Nielsen of TV ratings, they break down and visualize a mass amount of data using search terms and hashtags and curate this information based on their customers needs. This means having to sort through and organize tons and tons of data.
I worked with a small team at Nielsen Social and within the generous Nielsen brand guidelines to develop a website and dashboard, and breathe life into their many many reports.
Designing for data overload
Nielsen’s tech team was clever in how they collected and processed the data which led to new metrics and insights they could sell to their customers. This meant having to iterate and design for a fast moving industry and for novel concepts in measuring social interactions. This glut of information also meant we needed to design a dashboard and report system that was highly filterable and customizable, efficient and readable, and visually polished to meet the standards of the Nielsen name.
